How to Light the Modern Bedroom

Our bedrooms are our ultimate retreat but they are also much more. Depending on our lifestyle, our bedrooms have other functions. Thus lighting up the bedroom needs careful thought and consideration to make sure that this room has the right ambience at different times of the day and according to the task at hand.

Bedrooms need to have layered lighting. This means having different lighting fixtures that mimic the different conditions of natural light changes that occur in nature. The light in the room needs to have the right colour according to the different time of the day.  Ideally, the light colour should be a warmer shade when one is ready to go to bed and a natural or a cooler shade when one is engaged in practical tasks such as tidying up the room. Warmer and dimmer tones will help in relaxation and set a ‘sunset’ type of atmosphere that is needed before bedtime. This is where dimmer automated lights are a must. Dimmer switches or an automation system that is controlled via our phones ensure that we have comfort, convenience and control to enjoy and make the most of the bedroom space.

Practical decorative lights are important at specific points such as bedside tables.  Table lamps often act as an anchor point in design, but they are also an essential piece in terms of function like when reading or writing in bed.  In any case, the table lamp needs to have the right type of shade to ensure a good combination of light, shadow and contrast in the zone which they illuminate. 

On the other hand, decorative pendants, or lights hanging from the ceiling bring in another type of light into the bedroom.  Pendants lights in bedrooms are often hung at a lower level than other rooms such as the dining room to create a cosy and intimate setting.  In terms of size and diameter, pendant lights or chandeliers need to be proportionate to the size of the room itself. 

Another way of bringing light into the modern bedroom is via the use of linear lighting. The LEDs strips or track lights give a modern accent and a soft glow to the room.  There are creative ways of incorporating LEDs linear lighting strips or track lights into contemporary design but most of the time, it is to accentuate or emphasize particular architectural features of the room or furniture, such as when the lighting is recessed into a surface or a wall.
